Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD, DSM-IV): Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in children 6 years of age and older, was previously known as "attention deficit disorder" or "minimal brain dysfunction ". Other terms used to describe this conduct disorder are: hyperkinetic syndrome, minimal brain injury, minimal brain dysfunction, minor brain dysfunction, and psychoorganic syndrome in children. RITALIN® is indicated as part of a comprehensive treatment program that includes psychological, pedagogical and social measures aimed at stabilizing children with a conduct disorder syndrome characterized by moderate to severe distraction, reduced attention spans, hyperactivity, emotional instability, and impulsiveness. Diagnosis must be made according to DSM-IV criteria or ICD-10 guidelines. Neurological signs may or may not be present (mild non-localized, learning disabilities and EEG abnormalities); so the diagnosis of Central Nervous System (CNS) dysfunction may or may not be made.
Special considerations for the diagnosis of ADHD: The specific etiology of this disorder is not known, and no diagnostic test is available. To diagnose it correctly, it is necessary to carry out a multidisciplinary analysis that includes the medical, neuropsychological, pedagogical and social parts. The most common characteristics of the disorder are: a history of shortened attention spans, distractibility, emotional instability, impulsivity, moderate or severe hyperactivity, mild neurological signs, and an abnormal EEG. In some cases, learning difficulties may occur. Diagnosis should be based on a complete history and evaluation of the child and not just on the presence of one or more of these features. Not all children with this disorder need drug treatment. Stimulants are not indicated in children with symptoms induced by external factors (particularly abuse) and / or primary psychiatric disorders, including psychosis. It is essential to treat these cases in an adequate pedagogical setting, psychosocial intervention being generally necessary. When these measures are insufficient, the decision to prescribe a stimulant will depend on careful evaluation of the severity of the child's symptoms.
Narcolepsy: Symptoms are: daytime sleepiness, inadequate sleep episodes, and sudden loss of voluntary muscle tone.
