Doxycycline is indicated for infections caused by the following microorganisms:

 

- Rocky Mountain spotted fever, typhoid fever and typhoid group.

 

- Q fever, ricketsian and tick fevers caused by Rickettsiae.

 

- Respiratory infections caused by Mycoplasma pneumoniae.

 

- Psittacosis caused by Chlamydia psittacci.

 

- Lymphogranuloma venereum caused by Chlamydia trachomatis.

 

- Uncomplicated urethral, ​​endocervical or rectal infections of adults due to Chlamydia trachomatis.

 

- Trachoma caused by Chlamydia trachomatis.

 

- Inclusion conjunctivitis caused by Chlamydia trachomatis, although the infectious agent is not always eliminated, according to immunofluorescence examination.

 

- Inclusion conjunctivitis caused by Chlamydia trachomatis can be treated with doxycycline alone or with a combination of topical agents.

 

- Acute epididymoorchitis caused by Chlamydia trachomatis or Neisseria gonorrhoeae.

 

- Inguinal granuloma (donovanosis) caused by Calymmatobacterium granulomatis.

 

- Lyme disease (stages 1 and 2) caused by Borrelia burgdorferi.

 

- Recurrent fever transmitted by lice caused by Borrelia recurrentis.

 

- Recurrent tick-borne fever caused by Borrelia duttonii.

 

- Non-gonococcal urethritis (NGU) caused by Ureaplasma urealyticum (T-mycoplasma).

 

Doxycycline is also indicated for the treatment of infections caused by the following gram-negative microorganisms:

 

- Acinetobacter spp.

 

- Bacteroides spp.

 

- Fusobacterium spp.

 

- Brucellosis caused by Brucella spp. (in conjunction with streptomycin).

 

- Pest caused by Yersinia pestis.

 

- Tularemia caused by Francisella tularensis.

 

- Bartonellosis caused by Bartonella bacilliformis.

 

- Campylobacter fetus.

 

Since many strains of the following groups of microorganisms have been shown to be resistant to tetracyclines, culture and susceptibility testing is recommended.

 

Doxycycline is indicated for the treatment of infections caused by the following gram-negative microorganisms, when bacteriological tests indicate an appropriate susceptibility to the drug:

 

- Shigella spp.

 

- Uncomplicated gonorrhea caused by Neisseria gonorrhoeae.

 

- Respiratory infections caused by Haemophilius influenzae.

 

- Respiratory and urinary infections caused by Klebsiella spp.

 

- Escherichia coli.

 

- Enterobacter aerogenes.

 

- Moraxella catarrhalis.

 

Doxycycline is indicated for the treatment of infections caused by the following gram-positive microorganisms when bacteriology tests indicate appropriate susceptibility to the drug:

 

- Streptococcus spp: It has been found that a certain percentage of the strains of Streptococcus pyogenes and Enterococcus faecalis are resistant to tetracyclines.

 

Tetracyclines should not be used to treat streptococcal infections unless the body has been shown to be sensitive.

 

- Anthrax caused by Bacillus anthracis, including inhaled anthrax (post-exposure); to reduce the incidence or progression of the disease after exposure to Bacillus anthracis in aerosol form.

 

Penicillin is the antibiotic of choice for upper respiratory infections caused by group A beta-hemolytic streptococci, including prophylaxis of rheumatic fever. This includes:

 

- Infections of the upper respiratory tract caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae.

 

- Respiratory, skin and soft tissue infections caused by Staphylococcus aureus.

 

Tetracyclines are not the drug of choice in the treatment of staphylococcal infections.

 

When penicillin is contraindicated, doxycycline is an alternative modality for the treatment of:

 

- Actinomycosis caused by Actinomyces species.

 

- Infections caused by Clostridium spp.

 

- Syphilis caused by Treponema pallidum and yaws caused by Treponema pertenue.

 

- Listeriosis caused by Listeria monocytogenes.

 

- Vincent's angina (acute necrotizing ulcerative gingivitis) caused by Leptotrichia buccalis (formerly called Fusobacterium fusiforme).

 

Concomitant treatment: In acute intestinal amebiasis, doxycycline may be useful in conjunction with the administration of amebicides.

 

For severe acne caused by acne vulgaris, doxycycline may be helpful as a complementary treatment.

 

Treatment and prophylaxis: Doxycycline is indicated for the prophylaxis and treatment of the following infections:

 

- Malaria caused by Plasmodium falciparum (in areas with chloroquine-resistant P. falciparum).

 

- Leptospirosis caused by the Leptospira genera.

 

- Cholera caused by Vibrio cholerae.

 

Prophylaxis: Doxycycline is indicated for prophylaxis in the following conditions:

 

- Typhus of the chaparral caused by Rickettsia tsusugamushi.

- Tourist diarrhea caused by enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli.
