Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder: VYVANSE is indicated for the treatment of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).
The efficacy of VYVANSE in the treatment of ADHD has been demonstrated in three controlled clinical trials in children between the ages of 6 and 12 years, one controlled study in adolescents between 13 and 17 years of age, two controlled studies in children and adolescents between 6 and 17 years of age, two controlled studies in adults and two maintenance studies (one in children and adolescents aged 6 to 17 years, and one in adults). The diagnosis of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD, DSM) implies the presence of symptoms of hyperactive-impulsive and / or careless behavior that cause deficiencies and were present before the age of 7 years. Symptoms must cause clinically significant impairment, such as social, academic or professional functioning, and be present in two or more settings, such as school (or work) and home. The symptoms should not be better explained by another mental disorder. For the Inattention Type Disorder, at least 6 of the following symptoms must have persisted for at least 6 months: Inattention to detail and careless errors, sustained inattention; poor listening; lack of follow-up of tasks; disorganization; avoid tasks that require sustained mental effort; lose things; easily distracted, forgetful. For the hyperactive-impulsive type, at least 6 of the following symptoms must have persisted for at least 6 months: Unable to stand still / squirms; leave the seat; inappropriate when running / climbing; difficulty with quiet activities; "in constant motion", talks excessively; impulsive responses; cannot wait his turn; intrusive. The combined type requires that the criteria for both the distracted type and the hyperactive-impulsive type be met.
Special diagnostic considerations: The specific etiology of this syndrome is unknown, and there is no single diagnostic test. For the diagnosis to be adequate, the use not only of medical resources but also special psychological, educational and social resources is required. Learning may or may not be impaired. The diagnosis should be based on a complete medical history and evaluation of the patient and not solely on the presence of the required number of DSM characteristics.
Need for a comprehensive treatment program: VYVANSE is indicated as an integral part of a total treatment program for ADHD that may include other measures (psychological, educational, social) for patients suffering from this syndrome. Treatment may not be indicated in all patients. Stimulants have no place in patients with symptoms secondary to environmental factors and / or other psychiatric disorders, such as psychosis. Proper education and job placement are essential and psychosocial intervention is often helpful. When corrective measures alone are insufficient, the decision to prescribe stimulant medications will depend on the physician's assessment of the chronicity and severity of the patient's symptoms and the level of functional impairment.
Long-term use: Drug treatment for ADHD may be needed for long periods. The benefit of keeping child and adolescent patients (6-17 years) and adult patients (18-55 years) with ADHD treated with VYVANSE at doses of 30, 50 and 70 mg / day was demonstrated in randomized controlled trials. withdrawal (see Pharmacodynamic properties). Binge Eating Disorder: VYVANSE is indicated for the treatment of moderate or severe binge eating disorder in adults.
